The Bayeux Tapestry was created in the late 11th century to document the events leading up to the invasion of England by William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy in 1066. One of the most stunning features is the size: at over seventy meters long and half a meter wide (about 230 feet by 20 inches) it is one of the largest such artifacts in existence. The tapestry itself contains hundreds of scenes and images, each describing a theme or event.

While the origins are not clearly documented, variations on pieces of the tapestry began to pop up on 4chan's /b/ several years ago. Both original content and recreations of popular memes made their way into tapestry form, distinguished by the parchment background, characters and old English style of speech.

Inventing Your Own Piece of History

A Bayeux Tapestry for any drama or meme can be created with the Historic Tale Construction Kit, a magical place that can be used to illustrate anything. When creating your own tapestries, keep in mind:

  • Use ye olde English. For example instead of "Buy a dog" you could say "Purchaseth a Canine"
  • Since England in 1066 and Ancient Rome were so similar and close together in history, make sure you replace all Us with Vs.
  • Claim you drew the final image.
